We have recently received our first Green Flag award. Our Green School Committee have worked really hard because, as Nnanke (6th class) said, “Scoil Naomh Eoin is keen to go green!”
Our Green Code:
We want our school to be a nice place to be,
We do this by recycling our rubbish or planting a tree.
Plastic, cardboard, fruit skins and phones,
All recycled at Scoil Naomh Eoin!
Achievements to Date:
> We have been awarded our first Green Flag.
> A compost bin, recycle bin and reuse bin is in every classroom.
> Children now separate all waste.
> 75% reduction in landfill waste from the school – on average, we use less than half a black bin per week.
> Materials being recycled has increased from 15% to 70%.
> 5 compost bins are now in operation in our school. The resulting compost will be used in our school garden.
> All organic waste is now composted i.e. fruit skins, pencil parings and tea bags.
> Litter on the yard and around the school has dramatically reduced.
> Proceeds from our Green Day are going towards the purchase of a wormery.
> Please continue to recycle your batteries, ink cartridges and aerosol cans at our Bring Centre.
Well done to everyone who is trying their best to Compost, Reuse and Recycle!
Green Day/Lá Glas
Lá Glas was a day jam packed with fun activities to raise awareness about recycling. The Green Committee went to each class to test their knowledge on Green School issues. Kenny gave the children a guided tour of the compost bins and explained what happened to their compost waste. Children wore green or blue on the day. Each class were taught a lesson related to recycling. Some classes used recycled materials to create art while another made costumes from recycled materials and then had a fashion show. One class played a recycling board game and had great fun. The children recited “Our Green Code”. We were very happy to receive our green flag a few months later. Well done to the Green Committee for organising the day’s events!
